“Conservation is a great moral issue, for it involves the patriotic duty of ensuring the safety and continuance of the nation.” – Theodore Roosevelt
I have pondered these words to the greatest depths of my mind over the last few months and they have led me to countless prayers for discernment and guidance. Now official, I want to share with you that I have accepted an opportunity to serve within the Trump administration and will begin a new aim on May 1 in Washington D.C.
This new role will conclude my 13-year history at the helm of MFF as the President/CEO.
Establishing and growing MFF from a novel idea into a mule deer focused conservation powerhouse with affiliated chapters across seven states and organizational membership spanning all 50 states and more than 700 Life Members is special. While these accomplishments and actions to move the MFF mission forward have been plentiful, it is the relationships and the people along this journey that will always be the most significant. WE have done this together. All of the gains MFF has accomplished have been because of the army that we have built, together. It is also why I know these efforts will only get stronger moving forward. The MFF mission and model ensure its need beyond our living years.
When Joey and I established MFF in 2012 according to the 70/30 model, many said it would never last. The model focused on empowering local chapters to not only retain 70% of their annual net revenue, but also to bring together sportsmen and sportswomen to allocate funding through locally led, all-volunteer project allocation committees empowering individuals to measure the fruits of their labors, but also to take ownership in their personal engagement. This is our moment on the timeline of history and our stewardship responsibilities for the next generation is our patriotic duty. This is the backbone of MFF!
In addition to the enormous chapter conservation impacts, I will always be proud of the labors tackled by MFF HQ that initiated many actions to move the mission forward through funding contributions to mule deer research and drafting a bill to create the Wyoming Wildlife Conservation license plate. Additionally, efforts to provide funding for conservation easements, wildlife crossings, landscape level habitat projects and implementing the Putting the ‘U’ in Hunt program that has put over 100 youth with terminal or life-threatening illnesses in the field are a few of the highlights I recall when looking back on what we have accomplished together. Still, even with this list, I see faces and hear voices: pride, laughter, joy, teamwork, and accomplishment. I think of many people in all of these efforts. Thank you for being in the arena.
You have probably heard me say on more than one occasion that we are blessed with a bounty of wild and natural resources, but none are greater than our people. I believe this to my core.
It has been an incredible honor to lead MFF and it is going to be an incredible honor to serve the United States of America. Those of you who know me, know that I hold service above self with the utmost regard. It defines my existence.
I have been incredibly blessed to work with an exceptional team and hundreds of passionate volunteers and others who are committed to making a difference. This experience has prepared me well to take on this new challenge and I am eager to get to work.
I look forward to using my skills and experience to serve the American people in the Trump administration. I don’t know all the details of my role yet but I look forward to sharing those in the coming weeks and months.
With the support of my beautiful wife, children, family, and the MFF team to take on this new challenge I know, as the MFF motto states, Do the Right Thing, that this calling is the right thing to do.
With the deepest appreciation,
Joshua W.D. Coursey
Joey Faigl - President/CEO/COO/CFO/Co-Founder
Joey Faigl was born in Rock Springs, Wyoming and still resides there. He is a graduate of Rock Springs High School in 1992. Hired on with the Union Pacific Railroad in 1997 and was employed there for 16 years accomplishing great things in their safety program and achieving awards from Union Pacific and an overall award among all railroad companies, which was accepted in Washington DC. Co-founded the Muley Fanatic Foundation in 2011 and is now currently the MFF’s Chief Operating Officer/Chief Financial Officer, as well as many other positions within the organization.
Joey works hard for the organization and wants to make a difference. Faigl has a passion for mule deer and has for over 40 years. His first mule deer shed at the age of 5 may have influenced that, but the time spent in the winter ranges since 1990 filming and photographing the species has definitely increased his love and knowledge for the grayghost of the West. Besides his passion for mule deer and enjoying everything that involves the outdoors, Joey tries to find time to create pencil drawings of his favorite subject (wildlife), volunteer for community projects, be involved with local youth sports, watching the Wyoming Cowboys, enjoys graphic design, and video production.
Joey loves to laugh, strives to bring joy to his surroundings, and is usually laid back. Joey is a down to earth guy and wouldn't change his ways for anything. He likes to be the good ol' Wyoming boy. Although everything above is great, his true priorities in this world is Faith & Family. God comes first, his wife Nikki second, and his three sons; Brady, Brendan, and Hunter follow right behind. Creating memories with his family in God’s creations is what he loves the most.
Chris Steffen - Director of Operations
Chris Steffen was born in Rochester, New York in 1969. His parents had visited Wyoming on their honeymoon and decided they wanted to move out west and buy a ranch. When Chris was very young, his family carried out that dream and purchased a ranch in northern Wyoming, where Chris spent his childhood days helping the family raising cattle, working the fields, bombing around the dirt roads and doing all things outdoors. Hunting and fishing were a huge part of his life. Growing up, Chris spent a lot of time in the Big Horn mountains and mountains of the Cody area. Chris graduated from Rocky Mountain High School in 1987 and attended college for two years at Northwest Community College before transferring to Montana State University to finish up his schooling. Chris then took an about-face and rather than going into what he studied in college, he sought out a career in law enforcement. Chris entered the Pre-Service program at the Wyoming Law Enforcement academy, as it was in its beginning stages, and was the first civilian in the state of Wyoming to attend the WY Law Enforcement Academy and become a certified law enforcement officer, graduating with the class 91C69. Chris applied with a few different law enforcement agencies around the state, but found his home with the Green River Police Department in February of 1992. Chris worked a variety of positions within the GRPD, starting with patrol officer, Juvenile Detective, Patrol Corporal, Detective Sergeant, Patrol Lieutenant and lastly Chief of Police. Chris attended and graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia in 2005. The years serving and protecting the community of Green River were some of the proudest moments in his life. Chris retired from the Green River Police Department in November of 2017 and immediately went to work for the Muley Fanatic Foundation. Prior to working for MFF, Chris had gotten involved with Foundation as a volunteer with the Southwest Chapter, having felt it was important to give back to the outdoor world that he loved and to try to help the icon of the west, mule deer. He served on the Allocation Committee, took over as the Chairman for that group and then moved to the banquet committee. Chris served as both chapter co-chair and later, chapter chair of the SW Wyoming Chapter. Chris is a devoted family man and loves spending time with his wife Andrea, son Easton and identical twin daughters, Chloe and Clair doing everything they can in the outdoors. Summer camping, fishing, archery and of course, fall hunting, is what keeps Chris going! Chris is also a Wyoming Game and Fish Hunters Education Instructor, further assisting getting kids and other perspective hunters to get into the field. Most weekends Chris can be found with family or friends hunting or fishing in Southwest Wyoming, enjoying the outdoors and all of God’s creation.
Janet Crofts - Outreach Coordinator

Her family moved to Green River, Wyoming where she graduated from Green River High School (Go Wolves) in 1993. Janet left for college in Colorado after high school. Returning to Wyoming to later hire on with Dowell/Schlumberger in 1996 where she worked for 19 years in different Administrative roles. In 1995 she met her Husband Jay, and they were married in 1996. Janet’s husband is the one that introduced her to the Outdoors…hunting, fishing, camping, snowmobiling, and other outdoor activities! It didn’t take long for her to realize her love for the Outdoors and wildlife. In 2016 the Crofts’ Family took a 3-year hiatus to South Carolina, where they realized a couple things…1. You can take the person out of Wyoming, but never Wyoming out of the person. 2. You don’t know what you have until it is gone. In 2019 they moved back to the wide-open spaces of Wyoming. In 2020 Janet and her husband purchased their dream property in the Mountains outside Kemmerer, Wyoming where they spend all their free time! Janet has many passions some of them include crafting, spending time in the outdoors, outdoor photography, encouraging women to get outdoors, but her biggest passion is her husband, two dogs (Wahku, and Hakela), and their property.
